The anchor makes or breaks the room. The same 30-player auction can feel like an IPL broadcast or like attendance-taking — the only difference is the person on the mic. Use this script as your skeleton: keep the structure, and make the jokes your own.
The opening
Energy high. Everyone seated, owners with their purses ready.
“Good evening and welcome to the [league name] Player Auction — the night that decides everything!”
“Six franchises. One player pool. Every owner starts with the same purse of [purse] points — after tonight, no two teams will ever look the same.”
“Owners, look at your rivals. One of them is leaving tonight with the player you wanted.”
The rules recap
Slow down for this part. Thirty seconds, no more.
“Quick rules before the first name: every player opens at base price [base price].”
“Bids rise by the increment ladder — no shortcuts, no half-steps.”
“The timer is the boss: every bid resets it, and when it hits zero — sold.”
“You must always keep enough points to fill your remaining squad slots. The system won't let you bankrupt yourselves — that's my job to remind you and yours to forget.”
“Unsold players come back in a later round, so don't relax if your favourite slips through.”
Presenting a player
Vary these. Save the dramatic pause for known stars.
“Next up — [player name]. [Role], [age], and if you saw the last season, you already know why the base price won't last long.”
“Here's a name some of you scouted and all of you fear — [player name]!”
“The next player describes himself as [funny profile detail]. The bidding opens at [base price] — who's brave?”
During a bid war
This is the show. Short lines, quick delivery, count the timer down loudly at the end.
“[Franchise A] says [amount]! [Franchise B], your move — the timer's running!”
“That's a statement bid! [Amount] on the board!”
“Careful, [owner name] — win this one and you're doing the rest of the auction on a budget.”
“Five seconds! Four! Three... any advance on [amount]?”
Sold and unsold
Make every sale a moment. Never mock an unsold player — hype the comeback.
“SOLD! [Player name] goes to [franchise] for [amount] points — what a pickup!”
“At [amount], that's either the bargain of the night or a story we'll tell for years. Time will decide!”
“No bids this round — [player name] returns to the pool, and mark my words, someone's getting a steal later tonight.”
The closing
Bring the energy back up for the last player, then land the ending.
“The final player of the night is on the board — last chance to spend what you've saved!”
“That's a wrap on the [league name] auction! Six squads are locked. The excuses end tonight — the cricket starts [first match date].”
“Owners, your rosters are published. Players, check which jersey you're wearing. See everyone at the ground!”
Five anchor tips
- Learn three facts per player before the night — role, one highlight, one tease. Reading names off a list kills the room.
- Count the timer out loud for the last five seconds of every contested bid. It turns silence into pressure.
- Never bid-shame. Tease owners about spending, never players about price.
- Keep rules answers to one sentence and point to the rule book for the rest — momentum is everything.
- Take a break at halfway, and open the second half by reading out every franchise's remaining purse. Watch the room recalculate.
